Pineal Gland
Pineal Gland Guide: Function, Melatonin & Evidence
Understand the pineal gland, its role in melatonin and circadian rhythm, and where popular supplement claims go beyond established evidence.
What the pineal gland does
The pineal gland is a small endocrine gland in the brain. Its best-established function is producing melatonin in response to the light-dark cycle, helping regulate circadian timing.
Melatonin and darkness
Melatonin secretion rises in darkness and falls with light exposure. This timing signal is an important part of the body's sleep-wake system.
What about calcification?
Calcification of the pineal gland is documented in imaging and anatomical research and appears more frequently with age. Researchers continue to study its significance.
Where supplement claims enter
Commercial products sometimes move from these established facts to claims about “detoxifying,” “activating” or “decalcifying” the pineal gland. Those additional claims require their own evidence and should not be assumed from basic anatomy.
